Located over 200 kilometers from Hue city, the journey from Phong Nha – Ke Bang to Hue offers the opportunity to stop at numerous historical sites along the way when traveling by private car.

Our driver will pick you up in the morning from Phong Nha for the journey to Hue. After about an hour and a half, your first stop will be at the Ben Hai River and Hien Luong Bridge. These are situated in Hien Luong Village, Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province, a region that endured significant hardship and suffering during the war. The Ben Hai River, also known as the Rao Thanh River, stretches approximately 100 km, with its widest point spanning around 200m. Following the Geneva Accords in 1954, this river, located on the 17th parallel, was chosen as the temporary boundary dividing Vietnam into North and South. The Hien Luong Bridge, which spans the Ben Hai River, was constructed by the French in 1950 and painted in two colors with a white line in the middle—blue for the North and yellow for the South. Today, the Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River are renowned historical landmarks in Quang Tri Province and are must-visit sites in the DMZ area for history enthusiasts.

The next stop is the Doc Mieu Bases, located just 3 km north of Gio Linh district in Gia Phong village, on the eastern side of National Highway 1A. Perched on a red basalt hill, the French colonialists initially established this military base in 1947 along the highway, formerly known as Ba Doc..

After 1954, when the Americans took control of the South, they aimed to transform Doc Mieu into the largest military base in Gio Linh, investing over 800 million in its development. This base became part of the sophisticated electronic defense system known as McNamara’s Wall, designed to halt all aid from the North to the South between 1967 and 1970. Today, the Doc Mieu Bases are a significant historical site, drawing many visitors to Quang Tri.

You’ll also visit Quang Tri Citadel, located along the banks of the Thach Han River in the heart of Quang Tri Town. Originally built by order of King Gia Long in 1809 in Dang Xuong district, the citadel was later relocated to Thach Han commune in Hai Lang district. In 1827, under the reign of Minh Mang, it was reconstructed with brick, and much of it still stands today. Quang Tri Citadel bears witness to a brutal battle where thousands of national soldiers and local residents fought valiantly. During 81 days and nights (from June 28 to September 16, 1972), the citadel and Quang Tri Province were almost entirely leveled by hundreds of tons of American bombs. Quang Tri Citadel is now a special national relic that attracts not only veterans but also tourists from around the world.

The final stop before arriving in Hue is La Vang Holy Land, located in Hai Lang District. This site holds great significance for Catholic pilgrims. A complex of 15 statues, made of white cement, was constructed between 1961 and 1962, stretching from the entrance to the Rosary Square. Although the church and Rosary Square were heavily bombed and destroyed during the war, the bell tower still stands today, albeit showing signs of war damage. Every year on August 15th, the La Vang Festival draws thousands of visitors.
